PALAKKAD: A man was taken into custody from Palakkad for duping a housewife by posing as a saint. The incident happened in Palakkad Nellaya. Rafiq Maulavi, a native of Thekkumkara, was arrested in the case. Rafiq made the housewife believe in gold treasures hidden beneath her house. He also demanded the family give him their gold possession to do ‘rituals’ to unearth the hidden treasures.
The housewife met Rafiq through Facebook. Immediately after establishing a friendship, Rafiq prophesized about the hidden treasures in the house and asked the housewife to immediately move her gold ornaments from the house. Rafiq said he would send a messenger to the house and ordered the housewife give all her gold to him for safekeeping. As per Rafiq’s directions, the housewife handed over the gold to the messenger.
Despite handing over the gold, Rafiq failed to give her the treasure resulting in a police complaint. The incident took place on March 10 while Rafiq was arrested on Monday. A similar case was registered against him at Pattambi police station 10 years ago.
