THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transshipment container operation requires high precision and operational standards and that is why Vizhinjam port is undergoing a trial run before commissioning, said Minister VN Vasavan in a press conference.
Global standards are mandatory in key parameters such as dwell times, vessel turnaround, berth productivity, vehicle service time, ship handling productivity and crane productivity. Barges fitted with dummy containers are not sufficient to complete the required tests and demonstrate operational proficiency. A trial run deploying real containers has to be successfully completed.
Construction of the retaining wall of the port and the rest of the road connectivity work is progressing very fast. Of the required 32 cranes, 31 are operational. Four tugs were commissioned. Pilot cum patrol boat, navigation aid, port operation building, 220 KV sub-station, 33 KV port sub-station, perimeter wall and container backup yard are also ready.
Principal Secretary KN Srinivas and Adani Port Chief Operating Officer Pradeep Jayaraman also attended the press conference.
