KANNUR: In a strange incident, one MGNREGA worker in Kannur accidentally unearthed something eerily resembling a treasure, while working in a private land. The incident took place last Thursday near Chengalayi in Kannur.

The labourer was working on a trench in a private rubber field when she accidentally struck her plough on an earthen pot. At first, the workers moved back fearing the pot from some country-made bombs. It was only after hours that the pot was opened and to their surprise, came flowing gold coins and ornaments. The workers soon informed the panchayat president about the development. The police reached the spot and informed the archaeology department about the findings.

There were 17 pearl beads, 13 gold medals, four sapphire medals, a set of earrings and silver coins. The district collector informed that the archaeology department has started an investigation into the incident.
