'Intense lovemaking scene made me squirm'; actress Sona Nair talks about 'most challenging role'

There are still days when some random fan cares to praise Sona Nair for her unique portrayal of ‘Kunnumel Shantha’ in the movie Naran. It seems a tad surprising since ‘Naran’ was released almost two decades back while the characters remain alive and fresh within people.

Sona Nair:

We cannot imagine any actor other than Mohanlal as Mullankolli Velayudhan in Naran. He did so much work for the role and the final portions were filmed in Mysore where Lal sir surprised us all by deciding to do the stunts without any dupe.

Kunnumel Shantha had only one love in her life, Mullankolli Velayudhan. However, it was unrequited love and Velayudhan’s prime duty was to protect Shantha rather than courting her. I have dubbed for all of my films but lost the luck in 'Naran'.

About Kamboji:

Vinod Mankara was the director of the film and he is a good friend of our family. As soon as the director narrated the story, my mind already gave a big yes to the movie. The character mentioned had a wild love for Kathakali songs and I fell in love with the role.

However, a roadblock came soon as the director explained a love-making scene considered to be vital in the film. I squirmed upon hearing the scene and had my doubts. My husband being in the film industry was supportive while actor Vineeth was cool and gave me confidence with his words. The movie is still very close to my heart and I’m glad that I did the role.
