'Kerala's state of garbage accumulation is disgraceful, officials should visit Sri Lanka'; severe criticism from High Court

KOCHI: "Kerala's state of garbage accumulation is disgraceful. The condition of the capital city is pathetic. There is no city like this in the world. All this is happening under the government's nose." The severe criticism is from the High Court.

A division bench comprising Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas and Justice P Gopinath said that the report submitted by the Amicus curiae regarding the death of Joy drowning in the garbage in the Amayizhanchan canal is shocking. The court was considering the suo moto case.

"Officials should visit Sri Lanka and understand what steps Sri Lanka, despite being a poor country, is taking in this regard. The recommendations of the amicus curiae are important. The court will observe what steps the government has taken in each of these recommendations. Actions are needed, not talks or suggestions."

The High Court directed the Additional Chief Secretary Sharada Muralidharan, who explained the government's actions, to take strict action against the culprits. Additional Chief Secretary said that there are illegal garbage collectors in Thiruvananthapuram. "They will separate the valuables and then dump the waste in canals etc. Action will be taken against them and those who hand over the waste."

The video of garbage in the stream and other places near the Thampanoor KSRTC bus stand was shown in open court. The court said that there are scenes of garbage being thrown from a government vehicle in the video.

Entire Amayizhanchan canal will be cleaned
