Wayanad tragedy: 151 bodies recovered, report says 211 people missing

WAYANAD: The rescue mission resumed search operations in Meppadi Mundakkai where a massive landslide struck yesterday. The death toll has risen to 151. A complaint to the district administration by the relatives has mentioned that 211 people are missing. 481 people have been rescued. 3069 people are staying in relief camps. 186 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

More from the army will arrive for the search operations at isolated areas on the second day. The army in four teams is engaged in the rescue operations at Chooralmala. Voluntary organisations are also supporting the army in rescue operations. It is reported that the search of the fire brigade will start soon. Apart from the Kannur Defence Security Core and the Madras Engineering Wing of the Army, the Navy and the NDRF are also a part of the rescue mission.


The authorities informed that steps will be taken to release the dead bodies as early as possible. The post-mortem will be completed soon and the bodies will be handed over to the relatives.


A village was completely washed away in three landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Meppadi panchayat on Monday. There are around 1200 families in Chooralmala, Attamala, and Mundakkai areas of Vellarimala village. The victims were the working families living in the sheds of tea plantations and the people living on the riverside.
