CHALAKKUDY: Police have arrested a gang of robbers, who used to commit robbery by blocking vehicles on the national highway. Five men, including the three who robbed Rs 73 lakhs from the car of a businessman in Maharashtra, were arrested by the Kerala police from Chalakudy. After registering their arrest, they were taken to Mumbai by the Maharashtra police.
The arrested people are Athirappilly Kannankuzhi native Kanakambaran (38), Vettilappara Vanchikkadavu native Satheesan (48), Vettilappara Aroormuzhi native Ajo (42), Palakkad Vadakkumcheri natives Jineesh (41) and Faisal (34). Two of the natives of Athirappilly are BJP local leaders.
The gang robbed the money from businessman Rafeeq Bhai Sait's car on July 10. The incident took place in Palghar district in Maharashtra. Police have obtained hints that there was Rs 7 crore in the car and that more members were involved in the robbery. Rafeeq Bhai, a native of Rajkot in Gujarat, was travelling to Mumbai in his car when the gang blocked the car and attacked him. After shattering the car's windshield, the gang members took Rafeeq Bhai and his associates out and thrashed them. The criminals then abandoned the businessman and his associates on the roadside before driving away with his car and money.
The Mumbai police reached Thrissur during its probe focusing on gangs that commit robbery by blocking vehicles on the national highway. The Mumbai police team, which reached Chalakudy, identified the accused after examining the videos obtained from the toll plaza. Following this, the squad of the Chalakudy DySP nabbed the accused and handed them over to the Mumbai police.
