THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has again received a national award. The airport has received the Pollution Control and Waste Recycling Excellence Award instituted by the GreenTech Foundation. The airport authorities received the award at a ceremony held in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. The award was instituted for excellence in the field of waste management and processing.
The landfill diversion rate has reached 99.50% at the airport through waste reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery adopted for sustainable waste management. 100% of plastic waste and solid waste are processed at the airport. The airport has an ISO 14001:2015 certified waste management system. There are special systems to collect the segregated waste at the airport and transfer it to the recycling yard.
Recently, the airport authorities decided to buy a robot to clean the drains of the airport. It was decided to buy the robot from Genrobotics Company, which was used to search for cleaning worker Joy who died in the Amayizhanjan Canal.
