Country needs secular civil code: Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that laws that divide people and promote discrimination on the basis of religion have no place in modern society and that the country needs a secular civil code. The Prime Minister made the call after hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort on Independence Day.

"In our country, the Supreme Court has held discussions regarding the Uniform Civil Code again and again, and it has given orders several times. A large section of the country believes, and it is true, that the civil code that we are living with is actually a communal civil code in a way, a discriminatory civil code," Modi said.

"I believe that there should be a discussion on this serious issue across the country...Everyone should come forward with their suggestions. I would say that it is the need of the hour that there be a secular civil code in the country...We have spent 75 years in the Communal Civil Code. Now we will have to move towards the secular code. Only then would we be free of discrimination on the basis of religion," he said.

One lakh youths
"To free the country and democracy from ethnic politics and casteism, we are aiming to make one lakh youths from families with no political background as people's representatives. These youngsters can join the party of their choice and become people's representatives," the PM said.

One nation, one election
The Prime Minister pointed out that the ongoing cyclone of frequent elections is hampering the progress of the nation. He urged all political parties and stakeholders to collaborate on the initiative of 'One Nation, One Election.'

No compromise on corruption
"Some people are glorifying corruption. Fighting corruption is not easy but nothing is bigger than the country. Let's end the tradition of looting the common man by creating an atmosphere of fear for the corrupt," Modi said.

Safety of minorities in Bangladesh
"It is expected that the situation in Bangladesh will return to normal soon. The safety of minority Hindus is a top priority. India always wishes for happiness and peace in neighbouring countries," the PM said.

Condolences to Wayanad
"Expressing deepest condolences to those who have lost their families and properties in natural disasters. The country stands with the affected people in times of crisis," Modi said.
