Victim's personnel diary handed over to CBI; SC agrees to consider Kolkata rape case on August 20

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Sunday took suo moto cognizance of the dastardly rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital. A three-member bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday. Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra are the other members of the bench. The central and state governments will have to provide an explanation to the court.

The Supreme Court directly intervened in the issue after considering the nationwide outrage over the brutal killing of the doctor in West Bengal. Two lawyers had written to the Chief Justice demanding Supreme Court intervention. The Calcutta High Court had also expressed displeasure with the police investigation and handed over the case to the CBI.

Arrested Sanjay Roy was psychologically examined by a team of five experts from CBI's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) on Sunday. CBI conducted 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward building where the crime took place.

The parents of the victim handed over her diary to the investigating team. The team will peruse the diary to learn more about the psychological state of the victim and to know if there had been any previous connection between the victim and the accused. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar College, was questioned by the CBI for the third consecutive day. Details of his phone calls before and after the incident were sought.

Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Dr. Subarna Goswami, BJP leader and former MP Locket Chatterjee were questioned by the police for spreading fake news about the incident.

  • Thousands of people including doctors and students held a protest march in New Delhi.
