MUMBAI: Jay Shah will give up the reins of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to soon head the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been elected as the new chairman of the ICC unopposed. He will assume office from December 1 of this year.
Shah was elected to the position with the support of the Australian Cricket Board and the England Cricket Board.
Shah will be the youngest ICC Chairman in history. He has been picked as a replacement for Greg Barclay, who served as chairman for two terms. Barclay recently decided to no longer continue in the position.
Barclay held the chairmanship for two terms from 2020 to 2024. Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar are the Indians who have previously headed the ICC. After being elected as chairman, Jay Shah vowed to increase the popularity of cricket globally and work for the inclusion of the sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Jay Shah has one more year left in his tenure with BCCI but will hand over the reins to his successor to take the lead in ICC.
