ALAPPUZHA: The police detained the accused in the murder case of Subhadra (73) in Kalavoor. The police detained Sharmila and Mathews from Manipal in Karnataka. The body of Subhadra, who went missing from Kadavanthra on August 4, was found buried in the back of the rented house of Mathews and Sharmila on Tuesday. It is believed that Mathews of Kattoor and his wife Sharmila of Uduppi committed the murder. The two later went absconding.

Even before the murder, Mathews and Sharmila had dug a hole at the back of their rented house. The person who dug the pit told police that he had seen Subhadra in the house when he came here on August 7.

The family members and locals said the couple Mathews and Sharmila were alcoholic. It is believed that the murder was only for gold. It was found that her gold was pawned in Alappuzha and Uduppi.

It was Mathews, a construction worker, second marriage with Sharmila. They did not have any contacts with their neighbours. Subhadra, who lived alone in Kadavanthra, went with the couple without the knowledge of her own children. Sharmila came and took Subhadra with her. The police indicate that the murder was pre-planned.

The family of Mathews said that they knew Subhadra was murdered. Sharmila introduced Subhadra as her maternal aunt. The family members said there were financial transactions between Sharmila and Subhadra and there was a fight between the two over this.
