Chess virtuoso Viswanathan Anand, while in a candid chat show hosted by cricketer R Ashwin, revealed a story on his journey to Kerala and the people he met. Ashwin went to guffaws when Vishy elaborated on the happenings in his lucid style. The video of this chat show is now going viral on social media.
Vishy:
“I was heading to a felicitation ceremony in Kerala on a train. It was a nice journey and an aged man came to sit next to me. After some time he asked me what I was doing for a living. I said I played chess. The reply evoked no surprise in the man and he asked me again ‘That’s ok, but what are you doing for a living?’
I then replied that I played chess and it was my career. He then asked me whether I was studying or if my father had any big company to support me. I replied that my father had no such business to which the aged man nodded in acknowledgement. After some time, he again approached me and in a low tone told me not to take offence on what he was about to say.
He said that the field of sports was quite unpredictable in India and one needed to be Viswanathan Anand to taste success in lesser-known sports like Chess. He also had the generous mind to warn me to not take risks in life by taking Chess as a career option.
From the conversation, it was pretty clear that he was not antithetical to sports, but had to share his thoughts of how risky the sport can be in the long term.”
Interesting narration of his experience in Kerala by Viswanathan Anand😁😍 pic.twitter.com/8sKmj80EFr

Interestingly, Vishy never cared to reveal to the aged man that he was indeed the chess virtuoso everyone was talking about. R Ashwin also shared his thoughts on how balancing Indian people are when it comes to selecting sports as a career option. Ashwin said that Indian minds are yet to adapt to the reality that sports can help people earn a decent career like another job.
