It leaves one confounded to believe that ‘Paleri Manikyam’ the Malayalam film with four Kerala State Film Awards, is running in empty theatres across Kerala upon its touted 4K re-release. TP Rajeevan’s epic novel made into a film by director Ranjith tasted commercial success and swept awards in 2009.
Banking on the success brought by the recent re-releases in Malayalam, the producers announced the release of the remastered version of the Mammootty starrer just a month back. The news was received with much ado from fans but something was amiss from the very start. No trailers appeared for the remastered version while actor Mammootty announced the re-release in a simple Facebook post.
Despite being a festive season, the re-release is enduring a disastrous theatre run with no tickets being sold in some theatres in Thiruvananthapuram. In some theatres, only two tickets were sold even on holidays. Paleri Manikyam will also get ill praise for registering the lowest first-day collection for a re-released movie in Malayalam. Social media is now abuzz with discussions on the terrible move from makers to re-release a classic avant-garde movie and not going for some commercially performing movies that could have brought money to the coffers.

Really bad choice of film to re-release. Which Mammootty film do u want to re-release?
My choice would be Big B, Mrigaya, Pazhassi Raja or Rajamanikyam ...#PaleriManikyam pic.twitter.com/yP44KR2RyJ
Mammootty essayed three roles in the movie, the most gripping being ‘Murikkunnath Ahmed Haaji’, considered one of the best antagonist characters to ever grace Malayalam cinema.
