NEW DELHI: Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has said that his country will not take any action that compromises India's security. He arrived in Delhi yesterday for a four-day visit. Muizzu's visit to India comes at a time when tourism in Maldives is facing financial crisis after the strategic issues with India.
"Maldives will not do anything that compromises India's security. India is a valued partner and friend of the Maldives. The relationship between the two countries is based on mutual respect and shared interests. Even if we increase cooperation with other countries in many fields, we will ensure that it does not affect India's security'- said Muizzu in an interview to an Indian media.
The Maldivian President also answered the question why he asked for the withdrawal of Indian troop. The decision was made considering domestic priorities. Maldives and India now have a clear understanding of each other's priorities and concerns. "I did what the people of Maldives asked for," said Muizzu. The relationship with India is strong. The Maldives President added that the visit to India is aimed at further strengthening this.
Muizzu, who met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, will meet Indian President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. This is Muizzu's second visit to India. Muizzu also attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony last June.
