JAKARTA: Prabowo Subianto, 73, was sworn in as the new President of Indonesia. He was defence minister in the government of former President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. In the presidential elections held in February, Prabowo won 58.59 percent of the vote. Prabowo came to power with promises such as eradicating corruption and providing free food in schools.
Prabowo, a leader of the Gerindra Party, is a former commander of the country's special forces. He has faced various allegations, including human rights violations. He had faced an entry ban in the US for nearly two decades. Joko Widodo's son Gibran Raka has been elected to the post of vice president by Prabowo. He also took charge today.
For the swearing-in function, Prabowo Subianto was wearing a traditional black hat and navy suit with a woven maroon and golden sarong.
