PALAKKAD: B Shameer, the district secretary of the Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK), has resigned from the party in protest over the withdrawal of Minhaj as a candidate in the Palakkad by-election. This move comes just days after the DMK, led by MLA P V Anwar, announced its participation in the election, leading to a swift internal division within the organization.
Shameer stated that he initially aligned with Anwar due to a shared belief in maintaining the party's independence, steering clear of alliances with either the LDF or the UDF. However, Minhaj’s sudden withdrawal prompted Shameer to step down, expressing his dissatisfaction with the party's decision. He also announced his intention to contest the Palakkad seat as an independent candidate.
In response, MLA P V Anwar dismissed Shameer's claims, asserting that Shameer is not a registered member of the Kerala DMK. Anwar also responded to criticism that DMK's show of strength was "brought for hire," asserting that no payments were made and accusing the CPM of orchestrating disruptions at DMK rallies. He alleged that CPM members had infiltrated DMK events to undermine the party's credibility.
Anwar explained that the decision to withdraw Minhaj’s candidacy came after enduring significant pressure, which he described as a necessary move to prevent the BJP from gaining an advantage in Palakkad. Instead, Anwar expressed his support for UDF candidate Rahul Mamkoottathil, stating he would back Mamkoottathil unconditionally.
