Sankar was once one of the busiest actors of the Malayalam film industry. Majority of the films he acted were superhits and the actresses who paired with him had also earned a name in the industry. However, due to various reasons, Sankar had to stay away from acting. Now Sankar's friend and director Alleppey Ashraf has come forward with some revelations. Ashraf also spoke about Sankar's entry into Malayalam cinema, in his YouTube channel.
'Oru Thalai Raagam' was a Tamil film with fresh faces. The direction, production, hero and heroine of the film were all new people. However, there were many difficulties in releasing the film. None of the distributors or theaters were ready to screen the film. Finally, the producer hired a theater for a week at Kodambakkam in Madras and released the film.
Hundreds thronged to see the film. Sankar was the hero of that film. Then came the Malayalam film 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal' with Sankar in the lead role. Actresses Menaka, Ambika, Lizzy, etc. were regular heroines in Sankar's films. Mammootty and Mohanlal were not big actors when Sankar was reigning in the industry.
There were gossips at that time that Ambika and Sankar were in a relationship. As I was very close with Sankar, I knew it was true. We had talked about the gossips. A Tamil media had carried the news. The income tax department had on the same day raided the houses of Sankar and Ambika in Madras. Sankar had lost a lot of money then. He lost money for his romance with Ambika.
Sankar is himself the reason for his unsuccessful career. Sankar dubbed in his own voice only in Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Sankar entrusted Chandramohan to dub for him in all the remaining films. After a long time, Sankar dubbed in his own voice in 'Padayottam'. People did not accept it. It was a major fall for him. By then, Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi had emerged in Malayalam cinema with their acting and voice.
Sankar lost films by then. He left acting and entered into direction. He went and met Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi for that. Sankar expected the two to help him and act in his film, but it was a delusion,' clarified Ashraf.
