THRISSUR: The locals of Nattika have never seen such a major accident before. The view at the accident site was horrifying. The lorry accident that killed five members of a nomadic group happened at around 4 am on Tuesday. Five of a nomadic group sleeping at the construction site died tragically. Many of the bodies were in a crushed state in the first glance. It was not even clear how many people had died. The Valappad police immediately reached the spot.
The locals said the bodies scattered on the road had to be pulled out. Many had been mutilated. Parking was allowed at a nearby ground as it was Thriprayar Ekadasi. So, the nomads shifted to the highway to sleep. The authorities had also installed precise direction signboards to prevent vehicles from entering the road. In addition, coconut wood and concrete barricades were placed to block access. The lorry ran over the nomads after overcoming all this.
The bodies could not be completely removed even in the morning. Tiffin boxes, bags and buckets were all scattered on the road. The bodies are covered with cloth. The locals are shocked seeing this macabre sight.
Of the three people injured in the accident, two are in critical condition. Jayavardhan, Vijay and Chitra are undergoing treatment. The district administration has directed the medical college to provide all necessary medical facilities to them.
The dead have been identified as Kaliyappan (50), Jeevan (4), Nagamma (39) and Bengazhi (20). One of them is yet to be identified. The police have received information that they are natives of Chemmanathode in Govindapuram, Palakkad.
