THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader Sandeep Varier, who appeared for a talk show at the prestigious Soorya festival had a tough time tackling the questions from audiences. Many people raised questions over Sandeep’s shocking overnight switch from being a vociferous BJP supporter to a hardcore Congress worker.
Sandeep is a regular at the Soorya festival every year. Last year, he was on stage defending and boasting about the BJP ideology. Minding this, some from the audience, this year, took a jibe at him asking which party he would represent in next year's festival. Needless to say, Sandeep had answers to all queries.
Sandeep started his speech by defending his political switch. The first half an hour saw the now congress leader severely bashing his old party while showering praise on his new turf. He then raised the need for democracy to thrive in the nation to help raise better standards for political parties.
“Is there no limit to deceiving people by saying all congress ideologies are hard truth while BJP’s a hoax?” to this question from the audience, Sandeep maintained poise saying that ideology was a subjective matter and changes with different people.
“It is true that at one stage I couldn’t express my real opinion but had to tow with the party line. But now I changed and it is people’s acceptance of my views that resulted in BJP losing grip even in party strongholds in Palakkad,” replied Sandeep.
The next question was a little more invasive.
Qn: How can a man change like this overnight and sell his ideology? Which party will you represent in the next Soorya festival?
Sandeep: It is true that many people of the BJP, who are not democratically conscious, still find it difficult mentally to accept my switch. The old love that some people had for me has turned into anger. I’m sure that it will return to normal ways soon.
