Final rites of legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair performed with full state honors

KOZHIKODE: The final rites in Kozhikode ‘Smritipatham’ crematorium ended by 5.25 pm on Thursday, and so it is adieu to the giant of Malayalam literature. The final rites of MT Vasudevan Nair were conducted in all government honours. MT's brother's son performed the rituals. Ministers AK Saseendran Mohammad Riyas, MB Rajesh, Ramachandran Kadannappalli, Kozhikode MP MK Raghavan, Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil and director Lal Jose were present. Kozhikode Mayor Bina Philip was also in attendance.

President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have condoled the demise of the great Malayalam writer M T Vasudevan Nair. The Prime Minister on his X handle said MT was one of the most respected figures in Malayalam cinema and literature and that he gave voice to the silent and marginalised.

‘I am deeply saddened by the passing of M T Vasudevan Nair, one of the most respected figures in Malayalam cinema and literature. His works, with their profound exploration of human emotions, have shaped generations and will continue to inspire many more. He also gave voice to the silent and marginalised. My thoughts are with his family and admirers,’ Modi wrote in his condolence message.

President Draupadi Murmu said in her condolence message that MT's demise is a huge loss to the Malayalam literary world. ‘Rural India came alive in his writings. He was honoured with major literary awards and had made significant contributions to films. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan.’ She also offered her condolences to the writer’s family members.

Rahul Gandhi said MT Vasudevan Nairji’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in literature and cinema. His masterful stories, deeply rooted in Kerala's cultural heritage and human emotions, touched countless lives across generations.

While we mourn his loss, his rich literary legacy and wisdom will continue to inspire. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and admirers.

MT passed away at 10 pm last night. He had been undergoing treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode for the past few days. His funeral rites will be held at 5 pm today at the public crematorium on Mavoor Road in Kozhikode.
