KOLLAM: Two people have been arrested for cheating and extorting money and gold from the elderly parents of a youth whom they met through a matrimonial site. The arrested people are Kollam Perinad native Bincy (43) and her friend Kannur native Ashwin Kumar (32). Bincy got acquainted with the complainant's son through a matrimonial site. Following this, she collected information about his house and the family's assets.
Bincy and Ashwin, who arrived at the youth's house under the pretext of taking care of his ailing father, had a well-planned strategy. Bincy introduced Ashwin as her brother. They began their deception after taking the father to a hospital in Ernakulam for treatment. They first mortgaged a necklace and earrings of the youth's mother in the name of covering the hospital expenses. Later, they took the youth's mother to Kollam and retrieved 12 sovereigns of gold that were pledged in a bank. The accused then sold the gold in a jewellery store.
The accused also made multiple transactions of Rs 5 lakh through Google Pay and took possession of 18.5 sovereigns of gold. It was only later that the family realized they had been duped. Subsequently, they lodged a complaint with the police. The accused were arrested by a police team led by Kundara SHO Anilkumar. The duo was produced in court and remanded. Police said that Bincy and Ashwin are not siblings.
Ashwin met Bincy while working at a private establishment in Kollam. According to the police, the two have been living together.
