THRISSUR: Two women pedestrians were killed after they were knocked down by a speeding KSRTC Swift Bus at Ollur in Thrissur. The dead have been identified as Elsy (72) and Mary (73) of Chiyyaram. The incident happened near Chiyyaram Galeeli in Ollur Sunday morning at 6.30 am. The bus fatally knocked the two down when the two, who were neighbours, were crossing the road to go to the church. Both died on the spot itself.
Eyewitnesses said the speeding bus was going to Ernakulam from Thrissur. The bodies of both have been shifted to the district hospital mortuary. The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after postmortem.
This is the second accident involving a Swift bus in Thrissur in a week. Three lives were lost in two accidents. A four-year-old girl died after a Swift bus and a goods auto collided at Ottupara near Wadakkancherry in Thrissur last Wednesday. The dead was Noora Fathima of Mullurkara, who was travelling in the goods auto. The passengers in the goods auto were on their way to the hospital when the bus hit the back of the auto.
The number of people dying in road accidents has been increasing recently. The motor vehicles department and the police said most accidents are caused by rash driving. Drivers falling asleep and bad roads are also leading to accidents. The number of accidents is increasing even as measures to reduce accidents are being taken.
