NEW DELHI: A student was found hanging inside his room in IIT Kharagpur on Monday. Shaun Malik (21), a third-year electrical engineering student, died in the incident. Sadly, the incident came to light when Shaun’s parents reached the hostel to meet him. An investigation has been started into the youth's death.

Even after repeated phone calls and knocking, the door remained closed. This forced the parents and the hostel staff to barge inside. Every Sunday, Shaun’s parents visited him and brought along homemade food.

IIT officials also expressed shock at the death. According to the teaching faculty, Shaun was a bright student and was always high-spirited on campus. No suicide note has been recovered from his room nor anything suspicious. Shaun had a great rapport with his teaching faculties.

A lab assistant on the campus had died a few days ago. However, the media downplayed the chances of this death having a connection with Shaun’s incident. Shaun's body has been shifted to Medinipur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The last reported suicide in IIT Kharagpur was in June 2024.
