KOZHIKODE: Kanthapuram A.P Aboobacker Musliyar has strongly criticized the CPM, accusing them of interpreting his words out of context. He stated that the Islamic rule prohibits women from mingling with strange men and emphasized that his comments are directed towards Muslims. He asked why others should interfere in these matters. His remarks were a response to the position taken by CPM State Secretary MV Govindan.
"Women are to be protected like gold. Why should others jump in to oppose what we say?" asked Kanthapuram. He also questioned how many female area secretaries the CPM has in Kannur and why women are not considered for those positions.
Recently, Kanthapuram criticized the MEC 7 exercise initiative, which has been gaining public attention. He reiterated his opposition to any program that involves the mingling of men and women. This stance was indirectly criticized by Govindan, who labelled the approach regressive.
"The idea that women should not step into public spaces is a backward stance. Those clinging to such conservatism cannot sustain themselves. A progressive approach is the way forward," Govindan responded.
Kanthapuram reaffirmed his position during a speech in Kuttiady, stating that preserving religious values is paramount. He said, "I will oppose any program that involves the mingling of men and women, even if it means being criticized as reactionary. I am not saying this out of ignorance but with a clear understanding."
