OTTAWA: Canada is all set to give a befitting reply to US over Donald Trump’s ruthless tariff threats. On Saturday, Trump ordered a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese imports. It will be effective from midnight tomorrow.
Criticizing Trump's decision, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25 per cent tariff on US products worth 15.5 billion Canadian dollars. Of this, $3,000 crore of imports will be subject to tariffs from tomorrow and $12,500 crore of imports within 21 days. The tariffs will affect all products imported from the US into Canada.
The tariff war will also affect liquor sales. There were also reports that American-made liquor Bacardi and Jack Daniel's vanishing from Canadian liquor shops. Government-run liquor stores in Canada's British Columbia have reportedly started removing US-made liquor brands. As of yesterday afternoon, whiskey brands such as Jack Daniels were off the store shelves of Vancouver. Authorities are now requesting citizens to buy indigenous brands.
Boards were installed as part of an effort to encourage consumers to buy Canadian-made liquor. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also called on people to choose Canadian products. At the same time, Trudeau expressed his wish to not strain diplomatic relations with US. Trudeau, who announced his resignation last month, will step down in March.
