MALAPPURAM: The police have prevented an attempt to slaughter camels for meat in Malappuram's Kavanur and Cheekode areas. The action was taken after authorities noticed a social media advertisement seeking buyers for camel meat.

Four camels had been brought to Malappuram from Rajasthan. The price for camel meat was set between Rs 600 and Rs 700 per kilogram. However, slaughtering camels in India is illegal, and offenders can face up to five years in prison along with a fine. The police have launched an investigation to identify those behind the advertisement.

In Arab countries, camels are used for various purposes, primarily for their wool, milk, and meat, as well as for desert travel. A camel's lifespan can range from 40 to 50 years.
