THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George said that the majority of ASHA workers in Kerala receive incentives and honorariums ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 13,500, with Rs 9,500 of this amount being provided solely by the state government. She emphasized that Kerala offers higher payments compared to other states and clarified that the government does not take a rigid stance on the ASHA workers' strike. She also pointed out that only a small number of ASHA workers are participating in the ongoing protest. The minister made these remarks during a press conference held at the Secretariat.
"It is the central government that should make appropriate decisions regarding ASHA workers. Although ASHA is a central government initiative, Kerala has taken a compassionate approach to their concerns. Discussions are underway with the finance department regarding increasing the honorarium," the minister said.
"When the minimum educational qualification for ASHA workers was raised to the 10th standard, the state government, through the Literacy Mission, facilitated registration and exams for those who had not completed the qualification. Those interested in further studies have also registered at the higher secondary level. The state government has provided financial support for these initiatives. Additionally, Kerala has ensured that ASHA workers receive computer literacy training," the minister added.
