KOCHI: Three students of a school in Kalamassery have been confirmed with meningitis. The results of two are awaited. Five students of classes 1 and 2 of a private school were admitted to the hospital on Saturday with symptoms.
Ernakulam DMO clarified that no one's condition is serious and there is no need to worry. As per the directions of the health department, the primary level exams scheduled for the next day have been postponed. The Kalamassery Municipality has also directed the school to close temporarily.
Symptoms
The primary symptoms are severe headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in turning the neck and difficulty in looking at the light. Common symptoms seen in children include reluctance to eat, appearing inactive, and unusual reactions.
If the disease is severe, symptoms such as epilepsy, fainting, and memory loss also occur. If symptoms appear, treatment should be provided as soon as possible. Those bathing in stagnant water should inform the doctor about it.
Ways to prevent amoebic meningitis
Avoid swimming and diving in stagnant water. Ensure that water in water theme parks and swimming pools is properly chlorinated and clean.
Be careful not to get water in your nose while bathing in water sources. Completely avoid bathing in contaminated water and washing your face and mouth with unclean water.
