CHENNAI: A report surfaced recently suggesting that the BJP may remove Annamalai from his position as the President of the Tamil Nadu state unit. Annamalai had often made statements putting the AIADMK, a partner in the alliance, on the defensive. Although some argued that the decision to remove Annamalai from position of president was a punishment for his actions, sources close to him have denied this claim.

It is now being speculated that BJP plans to appoint Nainar Nagendran, a former minister in the Jayalalithaa government and the leader of the BJP Legislative Party, as the new President of Tamil Nadu BJP. This move is believed to be aimed at strengthening the alliance with AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections, according to sources close to Annamalai. Just last week, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During this meeting, Edappadi reportedly requested that Annamalai be replaced. After the BJP distanced itself from the alliance with AIADMK in 2024, the alliance has been under strain. Following this, Annamalai was summoned to Delhi, where he had a lengthy discussion with Amit Shah. After the meeting, Annamalai reportedly submitted suggestions for the party's success in the Tamil Nadu elections. He also clarified his loyalty to the party. Sources suggest that Annamalai will be given a significant responsibility by the party for the 2026 elections.

The central leadership has directed that the focus should solely be on combating the DMK. It is believed that Annamalai will only be removed after a new national president for BJP is appointed. The caste considerations are also being taken into account by the central BJP leadership. Annamalai belongs to the upper-caste Gounder community, while Nainar Nagendran is from the influential Thevar community. The party's decision is likely aimed at strengthening the AIADMK-BJP alliance through these considerations.
