Paneer is a star among vegetarians...especially in North Indian cuisine. It is a favorite dish of 90% of people. It is also rich in protein. However, what if a fake product comes out under the same name? The fake product being sold in the name of paneer was found during an inspection conducted in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, the other day. The new report comes after the Food Safety Department issued an order to take strong action against fake paneer in states including Gujarat.
Of the 122 samples selected for testing, 83% of the paneer products failed to meet the quality standards. Of these, 40% were found to be inedible, the report said. Milk was the second most adulterated product. The report said that 19 out of the 43 samples tested were inedible or did not meet the quality index.
Butter was the only product found to be unadulterated in this test. Starch is the common adulterant added to butter. Starch is often added to Paneer in the form of biscuits or flour. This can cause health problems, including indigestion.
