ALAPPUZHA: The Health University will provide Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of the six first-year medical students who died in a road accident in Kalarcode. 'Kerala Kaumudi' had published a news yesterday about the failure of the families to receive the financial assistance promised by the ministers even after five months of the accident. Vice Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal made the announcement after this came to light.
The money is being provided through the Benevolent Fund formed under the university three months ago for the students. This is being implemented using the university's own funds. All students currently studying under the Health University are eligible for this protection. No special amount is being charged from the students for this. The families should produce a certificate proving that they were students in an institution under the Health University at the time of the incident, a death certificate, and documents of the legal heirs. The VC said that the amount will be transferred to the bank account of the students' heirs after checking the documents and confirming it.
"A student under the University of Health Sciences will be eligible for this coverage regardless of the cause of death. There is a general perception that the families of medical students are wealthy. In reality, many families are going through major crises. The Benevolent Fund was launched with this understanding.
