NEW DELHI: Shashi Tharoor MP has clarified the Congress's campaign that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not surrender to the US during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He told a news agency that the present situation is different from the situation in 1971 and there is no point in comparing the two. Tharoor said that the objective of giving a warning against terrorism has been achieved. The Congress campaign started by pointing the 1971 incident when news was coming that the US had interfered in the ceasefire.
‘There is no point in prolonging the military conflict. The ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was first announced by US President Donald Trump. However, India, which confirmed the ceasefire agreement, clarified that there was no third-party intervention. As an Indian citizen, I am very proud of Indira Gandhi's action in 1971. The present situation is different from 1971.
A moral struggle for freedom was fought by Bangladesh at that time. Liberating Bangladesh was a clear goal of India. The goal of today's struggle is to teach a lesson to those who sent terrorists to India. They will have to pay the price for it. That lesson has been taught to them. This is not a war that is intended to be continued,’ Tharoor clarified.
