'Prank video for wife'; Man arrested for brutally torturing daughter in Kannur

KANNUR: Police arrested a man for brutally torturing his eight-year-old daughter after an appalling video of the incident surfaced last night evoking massive fury from people. The incident took place in Prapoyil, Cherupuzha, Kannur. The police have taken Jose, a native of Chittarikkal, Kasaragod, into custody.

The action was taken after District Police Chief Anuj Paliwal instructed Cherupuzha police to file a case against Jose.

The footage that got public shows harrowing visuals of Jose thrashing his daughter and even preparing to hack her with a sickle. There was massive criticism against the police for not initiating a case.

The Child Rights Commission jumped into action and instructed Child Line workers to urgently reach the child’s home. Jose was living in a rented house in Cherupuzha, Kannur.

While in police custody, Jose said that it was a prank video aimed to wheedle his estranged wife to return home. However, the officials are not ready to buy his claims as the child was seen repeatedly pleading to not hurt her, in the video. A detailed probe is underway.
