THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George has fulfilled Shanku's wish to have biryani served instead of upma in Anganwadis. As per the minister’s directive, the Women and Child Development Department has revised the food menu for Anganwadi children. The food menu was revised to ensure the health of children by reducing the amount of sugar and salt and to include energy and protein that helps in growth as per the nutritional standards and make it tasty.
The supplementary nutrition for Anganwadi children such as breakfast, lunch and general feeding has been revised. This is the first time that a unified food menu is being implemented. Minister Veena George released the revised 'model food menu' for Anganwadi children at the state-level inauguration of the Anganwadi Praveshanolsavam held in Pathanamthitta.
The minister, who noticed Shanku's video, had assured that she would consider Shanku's opinion and review the food menu. Subsequently, the Women and Child Development Department held a meeting at various levels to ensure the health of the children and revised the food menu. The menu has been revised by including egg biryani and pulao. Milk and eggs provided every two days, have been changed to three days each.
According to the revised food menu, a variety of food is provided every day. On Monday, milk, pidi, kozhukatta/ilayada for breakfast, rice, chickpea curry, leaf curry, upperi/thoran for lunch, grains and lentil stew as the main meal. On Tuesday, nutri laddu for breakfast, egg biryani/egg pulao for lunch, fruit cup, and ragi ada as the main meal. Wednesday breakfast: milk, pidi, kozhukatta/ilayada, peanut candy, lunch: porridge, veg potato curry, soya dry fry, main meal: idli, sambar, puttu, green peas curry. Thursday morning: ragi, rice-ada/ilayappam, lunch: rice, sprouted chickpeas, spinach, sambar, egg, omelette, main meal: aval, jaggery, fruit mix.
Friday breakfast: milk, kozhukatta, lunch: rice, chickpea curry, avial, leaf curry, thoran, main meal: wheat nurukku pulao. Nutri Ladoo will be served on Saturday for breakfast, vegetable pulao, egg, raita for lunch, and payasam as main meal. The food menu includes information on the ingredients used to prepare each dish and the nutritional value of the energy and protein they contain.
