PATHANAMTHITTA: The Cyber Helpdesk of Pampa Police recovered and returned 102 phones of Sabarimala devotees that were lost during the pilgrimage in the last five months alone. The Cyber Helpdesk, newly formed by District Police Chief V.G. Vinod Kumar, deserves credit for this remarkable achievement.

Devotees register complaints of lost phones at the Pampa police station and the details are recorded in the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The lost phone is immediately blocked and a message is sent to the registered mobile number. When the blocked phone is turned on with a new SIM, the network service provider transmits the information to the police station through the portal. The helpdesk officials will contact the current user and make arrangements for the return of the phone. The recovered phones were used in various states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, North India and Northeastern states.

In May alone, 25 phones worth around Rs 6.5 lakh were recovered. Most of the phones were found in Cumbum, Theni and Coimbatore, where they were being sold second-hand in mobile shops. A special team of 12 police officers led by Pampa Police Inspector C.K. Manoj and supervised by Ranni DySP Jayaraj recovered the lost phones. However, the police opined about a fall in the number of complaints regarding stolen or lost phones compared to previous years.
