AHMEDABAD: An Air India flight carrying 242 passengers bound to London crashed shortly after takeoff at Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The flight crashed in a residential area at Meghani Nagar in Gujarat near Sardar Vallabhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad.

The Air India flight A1171 took off for London at 1.10 pm. Initial reports say that the flight may have crashed after hitting a tree or a wall during takeoff. Seven fire brigade units have reached the area and are trying to douse the flames. The visuals of the flight engulfed in flames and black smoke bellowing has surfaced. Since it was taking off, there was a lot of fuel on board. It is believed that this may have caused a major explosion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel, state home minister Harsh Sanghavi and the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner over the incident. He assured that the centre will provide all necessary assistance to the state in managing the aftermath and investigation of the crash.
