THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Milma has begun discussions on increasing milk prices in the state. The proposal will be discussed in a meeting scheduled for June 30, after which a recommendation will be submitted to the government. The price hike will only be implemented if the government grants approval.
The Ernakulam Regional Union had earlier demanded an increase in milk prices, and the Malabar Union has also expressed the opinion. The Thiruvananthapuram Union is scheduled to meet on the 25th to state its stance. Milma's final decision will be made after assessing how the price hike will affect consumers and the market. Currently, the price of one litre of milk is Rs 52. The last price hike was introduced in December 2022, when it was hiked by Rs 6 per litre.
At present, dairy farmers receive around Rs 46-48 per litre of milk supplied to cooperative societies. However, farmers argue that this amount is insufficient when compared to the rising cost of cattle rearing. The final decision on the price hike will be made after considering such complaints.
