Hindu woman gangraped at knifepoint by prominent politician in Bangladesh; disturbing video surfaces

DHAKA: Five prominent politicians in Bangladesh were arrested for brutally raping a Hindu woman and later circulating the horrific video of crime on social media. The incident took place in Ramchadrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar police station precinct in Comilla.

According to reports from a national website, Fazor Ali was caught red-handed by locals while he was sexually abusing the wife of an expatriate from the same village. It is said that Fazor is a popular leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He broke into the house of the victim and raped her at knife point.

The victim is now living with her parents in Comilla as her husband is abroad. Since the time she reached her parents' house, Fazor has been stalking her. Last Thursday, the victim was alone at her house as her family went to visit a local fair. Fazor zeroed in on this moment and broke inside the house and abused her brutally at knifepoint.

After some time, the victim cried for help, which alerted a few locals. Fazor was beaten by the villagers, but he managed to escape. Meanwhile, four others who were with Fazor Ali took a video of the victim lying naked and pleading to be left alone. They circulated the video on social media to add salt to the injury.

A case was subsequently filed at Muradnagar Police Station. Soon after, Fazor Ali and four others were caught by police, and a probe is underway. The horrific rape comes amidst surge in violence against Hindu communities in Bangladesh.
