KOTTAYAM: As the opposition politicises the tragedy caused by a building collapse at Kottayam Medical College, the government is attempting to save face by addressing the demands of the deceased Bindu’s family. Minister V.N. Vasavan stated that the government stands with Bindu’s family. Although a promise was made to conduct an emergency surgery for Bindu's daughter Navami at the medical college, her father has requested a postponement due to her current emotional condition. The minister also informed them that Bindu's son Naveen, who was offered a temporary job through the Hospital Development Committee, may have his position made permanent.
Based on the District Collector’s report, adequate financial assistance for the family will be announced in the next cabinet meeting. Additionally, Minister Dr. R. Bindu assured Bindu’s husband Vishruthan and mother Seethamma over a phone call that the family's unfinished house will be renovated under the National Service Scheme (NSS) led by the Higher Education Department.
Criticising the opposition, Vasavan said they are trying to play politics ahead of the local body elections and mocked the demand for the Health Minister’s resignation by remarking that it makes it seem as if the minister herself caused the building collapse.
The post-mortem report states that death occurred instantly due to brain injury and fractured ribs caused by being trapped under the building debris. The ruling party has dismissed the allegation that the rescue operation was delayed, pointing out that the cause of death was not suffocation.
