NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has described the case of Nimisha Priya- the Indian woman sentenced to death in Yemen for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national- as a highly sensitive matter. Addressing the media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government is actively pursuing the matter through diplomatic channels and has sought the assistance of friendly nations.
Jaiswal confirmed that legal aid has been extended to Nimisha Priya’s family and that the Indian authorities have maintained consistent communication with both Yemeni officials and her relatives. He also noted that consular visits have been facilitated to monitor the situation and provide necessary support.
The MEA spokesperson stated that the postponement of the execution has created more opportunities for dialogue and negotiation, enhancing hopes for a resolution. The Indian government, he said, continues to press for a favourable outcome, including through diplomatic efforts involving foreign countries.
When questioned about reports suggesting the involvement of Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar in deferring the execution, Jaiswal said he had no information to confirm such claims. He clarified that he had no information to share regarding the individual mentioned and his role in the postponement of the execution.
Speculation has been rife that the intervention of Kanthapuram — through the respected Yemeni Sufi cleric Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, known for his influence among local Muslim communities — may have played a key role in delaying the execution. The MEA’s remarks come in the backdrop of these reports, as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a resolution in the high-profile case.
