Jagadheesh to face Shwetha Menon; tight race in AMMA, 125 nominations filed so far

KOCHI: The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is gearing up for elections. Jagadheesh and Shweta Menon have filed their nominations to contest for the post of president of AMMA. More than five nominations have been submitted for the president’s post presently. Baburaj has filed his nomination for the post of general secretary and Ansiba Hasan for the joint secretary post. A race is being held for the president’s post for the first time. Many of the stars in AMMA have come forward for the election this time.

The specialty of this election is to watch whether a woman will helm the organization for the first time. There are 508 members in AMMA. Of these, more than 125 nominations have been submitted till yesterday. After scrutiny, the list of candidates will be announced at 5:30 pm today. Although the names of Kunchacko Boban and Vijayaraghavan have emerged for vital posts, they have not yet filed their nominations. AMMA elections will be held on August 15. Voting will be held in the morning and the results will be announced by evening. Polls are being held for the posts of president, vice president, general secretary, treasurer and executive committee.

After the death of Innocent, Mohanlal had thrice served as the President of AMMA. He was the one who led the last governing body that resigned following the Hema Committee controversy. However, soon after the announcement of the elections this time, Mohanlal took a stand that he would not contest again. Mohanlal announced his decision after rejecting the request of the ad hoc committee to continue as president.
