CHENNAI: India's first hydrogen train was successfully tested at the Integral Coach Factory Yard in Chennai. This is claimed to be one of the most capable hydrogen trains in the world. This is a milestone moment in building a sustainable India in the future, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw wrote on Twitter. He also shared a video of the test run.
'India is developing a 1200 HP hydrogen train. With this, India will be at the forefront of hydrogen energy' - Ashwini Vaishnaw said. To a question raised in the Rajya Sabha regarding hydrogen trains, he opened up about a plan to run 35 hydrogen trains at a cost of 80 crores. He also said that 70 crores have been spent on the infrastructure of hydrogen trains.
Only one engine was tested today. Another engine will be tested next week. ICF officials have announced that the hydrogen trains will be handed over to the railways by the end of August. Each engine will use hydrogen fuel at the front and rear, and there will be eight ordinary coaches in the middle where passengers can board. Railway officials have clarified that the hydrogen train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route for the Northern Railway.
