WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on imports from India. He also stated that there are plans to impose penalties on India for purchasing military equipment and crude oil from Russia. The announcement was made via the social media platform Truth Social.
'India is our friend, but for years, their tariffs have been extremely high. India has some of the toughest and most unreasonable trade barriers compared to any other country,' Trump wrote.
'Most of India’s military equipment is bought from Russia. At a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killings in Ukraine, India is also buying crude oil from Russia alongside China. This is not very good. Starting August 1, imports from India will face a 25% tariff along with penalties,' Trump added.
