Massive cloudburst in Uttarakhand; village washed away, several missing

DEHRADUN: A village has been washed away and many feared dead after a massive cloudburst struck Dharali area near Harsil in Uttarakhand’s Uttarakashi. Four have been feared dead and several missing. Police, NDRF, army and other disaster relief teams have reached the spot and are carrying out rescue operations.


Visuals and pictures of the cloudburst are being circulated on social media. The horrifying visuals show houses being swept away in the waters.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that isolated places in Uttarakhand are likely to receive heavy rains in the coming hours. Around 10-12 people may be trapped under the debris, villager Rajesh Panwar told a news agency. He added that 20-25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away.


Uttarakhand has been lashed by heavy rains for the past few days. Extensive damages have also been reported. Yesterday, one person was missing in the Bhakra stream near Haldwani. On Sunday, two people drowned in a stream near Bhujiagat.
