NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court's order to remove all stray dogs from streets received laurels and brickbats alike. With the topic becoming hotly contested, the matter was transferred from the current bench to a three-member bench. The action was taken by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, and the matter will be considered on Thursday. A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, issuing a strict order to remove stray dogs from all areas of the national capital.
Adv. Garima Sharma informed the apex court on Wednesday about how the municipality engaged in removing dogs from streets even before the August 11 order from the apex court. An animal rights organisation also demanded that the matter be considered urgently. A special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N.V. Anjaria was formed by Wednesday night to hear the matter.
