DUBAI: Afghanistan will face Hong Kong in the opening match of the Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE on September 9. This year's Asia Cup is marred by controversy over the Pahalgam terror attack and the chances of Indian and Pakistan facing each other.
There were rumours that the matches between the two teams would be cancelled due to the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan. However, the Asian Cricket Council cleared the air, saying that the match would be played. India and Pakistan are in Group A, which also includes the UAE and Oman.
Meanwhile, former Indian players have suggested that the matches between India and Pakistan be cancelled to honour the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the border conflict. Former Indian batsman Kedar Jadhav also came forward, suggesting that the match be cancelled.
"I don't think Team India will play against Pakistan. As far as India is concerned, they will win wherever they play. But never play a single match with Pakistan," Jadhav said.
Earlier, former Indian player Harbhajan Singh had also suggested avoiding a match with Pakistan. Singh said resuming the cricket match with Pakistan is tantamount to mocking the soldiers who lost their lives. India's first match in the Asia Cup, which starts on September 9, will be against the UAE on September 10. The India-Pakistan clash will be on September 14.
