KANNUR: An official of the Motor Vehicles Department was caught red-handed with bribe money during a surprise inspection carried out by the Vigilance.
The raid was conducted based on the tip-off received by the Vigilance that the Senior Superintendent at the Kannur RT Office was collecting bribes from those applying for registration, re-registration, hypothecation cancellation and permit through an agent. As per the tip-off, the bribe money collected by the middleman was routinely handed over to the officer after duty hours.
On Thursday night, the officer was returning to his home in Thalassery when the Vigilance team from the Kozhikode Special Cell intercepted his car at Thayyil and inspected the vehicle. During the inspection, unaccounted money amounting to Rs 32,200 was seized from the car. Following this, the Vigilance team inspected the RT office as well.
