Mahatma Gandhi once said that if we witness any injustice, we should not cover it up but reveal it, and even if it is something we ourselves have done, we should admit it without hesitation. In the Kerala Assembly, where accusations and counter-accusations are common, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan’s recent apology stood out as a model for the entire House and as a reflection of the beauty of democracy.
Usually, politicians try to justify or defend themselves when they make mistakes. But Satheesan recognised an error he had made, withdrew his words, and apologised. By doing so, he set a fine example not just for the parliamentary system but for society as a whole. This approach also offers hope to the younger generation, who expect integrity and high values from their leaders. The issue began with Satheesan’s remark the other day, accusing Minister G R Anil of telling blatant lies. The comment was made during Thursday’s debate on the adjournment motion moved by Congress MLA P C Vishnunath against the price rise. Minister Anil had pointed out that Satheesan had praised the government’s steps to control inflation during his speech at the inauguration of the Onam Market fair in Paravur. Satheesan denied it, saying he had only lit the lamp at the event and had not spoken, and accused the minister of lying. Minister Anil responded that he had a video of Satheesan’s speech and was ready to share it.
On Friday, Anil raised the issue again, demanding that the video of Satheesan’s speech be produced and made part of the Assembly records. At that time, the opposition members had staged a walkout. When Satheesan returned later, he withdrew his earlier remark and apologised, saying he had spoken out of sudden provocation and it was a lapse of memory. MLA Mathew T Thomas reminded him that the remark “blatant lie” is unparliamentary and that he should have instead said “factually incorrect.” Following this, Satheesan requested the Speaker to remove the word from the records. Speaker A N Shamseer praised Satheesan, describing his action as a commendable example.
Only those who understand that politics is not just about wins, losses, or profit-and-loss calculations can respond in such a manner. Nobody is free from mistakes, but it takes courage to admit them openly and correct them. Satheesan, who has been an MLA for over two and a half decades, is known for his thorough preparation and for handling the responsibilities of Opposition Leader effectively.
At a time when values are eroding not just in politics but across public life, and when conflicts and grudges are growing even over trivial matters—as seen daily on news channels—it is important for public leaders to set bright examples. Satheesan’s mature conduct is one such example worth following. This is also an occasion to appreciate and congratulate him.
