Actress Mallika Sukumaran had earlier said that she was the kind of mother-in-law every daughter-in-law would wish for and that she never interferes in their freedom. She has now said that daughters-in-law will always remain daughters-in-law and can never become daughters. She said this during an interview given to a YouTube channel.
“I'll say one thing honestly. Daughters-in-law will always be daughters-in-law, not daughters. We can speak openly to our children. But if we use the same tone with our daughters-in-law, they may think the mother-in-law is taunting them. In today’s world, society often sees mothers-in-law as terrifying figures. I want to live as an exception to that,” Mallika said.
“My children sometimes ask, ‘Why are you showing this much pride, Amma? Can't you come here and stay with us? I'll reply that I'm only five minutes away from their flat and that all my old helpers are with me.’ It’s not because of anything else, but they have their own lifestyle. They may want to go out and eat, while I prefer home-cooked food. The new generation finds it difficult to adjust to such differences. A husband may want to take his wife and children out, and sometimes the kids may feel their father would have taken them out if the grandmother weren’t around. I don’t like interfering with their freedom. Girls usually feel more free with their own mothers. Even if I get a fever, both my sons get tense," Mallika Sukumaran added.
